Students will explore the government of the United States from its beginning to the present with special emphasis on the Biblical pattern for government and on the U.S. Constitution. By learning about the operations of federal, state, and local government, and about issues facing our nation today, students become better equipped to understand, be involved, and examine their role in shaping public policy.
In addition, using the book You Decide! Applying the Bill of Rights to Real Cases, students will learn critical thinking skills as they learn the Bill of Rights, look at real court cases involving each amendment, judge each case based on their knowledge of the Bill of Rights and the facts of the case, and compare their ruling with the ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court. What could be more fun than putting knowledge with practical application?!
The class will discover:
  • the checks and balances of the three branches of the government
  • how laws are developed
  • responsible ways to influence or change proposed legislation
  • how to become an influence in the political process
