English for 9th Graders is a college-prep 32-week IEW writing course designed to help students read, think, and write effectively in a manageable, step-by-step way. It provides a foundation in important critical thinking and writing skills for high school, college, and beyond.

Beginning with creating Key Word Outlines from different source texts, students will incrementally learn how to annotate what they read, identify key points and elements, and organize and develop their own thoughts into an essay. The focus will be on the structure and style of writing, and students will develop their own writing "tool box" that is essential for good writing. During the course, students will write for a variety of purposes including expository, persuasive, creative, and literary critique. Outside pieces of literature will also be assigned and discussed.

Grammar will be taught in the context of the student’s writing as well as through weekly assignments from IEW's Fix It! Grammar.

This course will complete 1 high school credit in English.

The tutor will provide a list of needed books and supplies upon registration.

At the end of the year, students will have an impressive notebook that they will want to take to college to help them with their college papers.
